Denver Rio Grande Western Bumble Bee Paint

The yellow “bumblebee” paint scheme seen here was used for a time after the 1952 movie “Denver & Rio Grande.” The locomotives and tenders were painted in that pattern for use in the technicolor film, though it was not historically accurate. Tourist trains in the 1950s used this paint scheme on the Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. By the 1960s, the color scheme was retired. In 2005 and 2006 the railroad used this paint scheme with 473. These pictures were taken on a photo charter the railroad did in 2005.
